Liquor photography: getting the glass right

· Jöel Ventura

Liquor bottle photographed at TimeLäB Studio

A spirits bottle is one of the hardest things to photograph well. The glass is transparent and reflective at the same time, the liquid has a colour that carries the brand, and the label has to stay legible from the studio all the way to the shelf. Get one of those wrong and the shot looks cheap, no matter how good the product is.

Reflections: the work is subtractive

Most people think studio lighting is about adding light. With glass, it’s mostly about taking it away. A bare bottle mirrors the whole room — the softbox, the tripod, the photographer. The job is to control what the glass is allowed to reflect: flags and black cards to carve out clean edges, polarising filters to kill the glare that flattens the surface, and a background chosen so the bottle reads as glass, not as a bright blur.

The liquid does the selling

The colour and clarity inside the bottle is half the image. The warm amber of a whisky, the green of a herbal liqueur, the absolute transparency of a vodka — each needs different exposure and, often, a light placed behind the bottle to let the liquid glow instead of going dark. This is where a flat catalogue shot becomes something that looks like the product tastes.

The label has to survive the shelf

Foil, embossing and fine type are easy to lose. We light so the label stays readable and the finishes catch just enough highlight to show they’re there. In post we correct — a dust speck, an uneven reflection — but we don’t fabricate: if the bottle has a texture, it keeps it. An image that lies gets found out the moment the box is opened.

In short

Good liquor photography is control: of reflections, of the liquid, of the label, on a set built for glass. It’s the same discipline we bring to every bottle, jar and flask that comes through the studio.

If you’re shooting a spirits range, that’s exactly what our product photography is built for.
